When winter strikes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these signs sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it could be time to start looking into a new system.
